Nintendo not giving up on the Wii

Wii owners are quite unhappy with the confirmation of the Wii 2 being shown by Nintendo at this years E3. The lack of first party titles scheduled for release on the Wii for the first quarter of 2011 hasn't helped this growing sentiment. Now many Wii owners feel the system has been abandoned. However Satoru Iwata claimed otherwise at a Japanese investor meeting, with apparently a bunch of titles coming out for the Wii later this year.

"We have not released any new Nintendo software titles for Wii, except for The Last Story (Japanese Title) in January, partly because we have focused on the launch of Nintendo 3DS since the beginning of this year. Therefore, some in Japan seem to have the misunderstanding that Nintendo has given up making efforts on Wii. We are actually ready to release new Wii software titles every month from May to the end of this year."

Activision Pulls the Plug on Guitar Hero Franchise & True Crime

In a surprise move, Activision have given the Guitar Hero Franchise and the upcoming True Crime: Hong Kong title the thumbs down and brought them to an early grave. That's right, Guitar Hero is no more.

Activision said that sales of Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock was a major reason for ending the franchise. The last iteration of Guitar Hero not only received poor critical response, but also failed to move units. Apparently gamers have grown tired of the whole Guitar music games genre in general, with Rock Band creators Harmonix having been recently sold off to Viacom.

"Due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing's Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011. The company also will stop development on True Crime: Hong Kong. These decisions are based on the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world's best interactive entertainment experiences."

Conduit 2 Actual Release Date Unveiled

The sequel to one of the more prominent exclusive first person shooters on Wii now has a release date you can mark on your calender. Conduit 2 will be available for purchase on the 15th of February 2011 in North America. The game was originally planned to be released for the 2010 holiday season, but Developer High Voltage decided the game needed more work and was delayed to the first quarter 2011. Here's hoping it's an improvement on the solid first outing.

Wii Speak to be Phased Out by Nintendo

The Wii Speak accessory is a microphone which allows you to chat online. Unless consumer demand increases, the plan is to slowly drop retail support of the device completely.

It's now only available at a few limited retail locations and supply will not increase unless there is sufficient demand for the product. Nintendo suggest using an alternative accessory such as the Headbanger Headset which will continue to be available and supported by upcoming games.

There was no mention of what will happen with the Wii Speak channel.

Sonic Team Responds to Sonic 4 Physics Complaints

Unhappy with the physics in Sonic 4: Episode 1? Well, you're not alone. Fans have been vocal in causing an uproar that the physics don't match those of the Genesis classics, which has garnered a response from Sonic Team itself. Sonic Team producer Takashi Iizuka however was quite adamant about the changes and believes they're for the better. "In this title, we have not done a straight port of the gameplay from the Genesis games, but rather updated it with actions which could not be done in the previous titles, like ceiling-running."

All is not lost however and if you complain loudly enough, the changes may be reversed, but it's doubtful there will be a patch for the first episode.

"These changes probably made for a different feel to the longtime Sonic fans. We're happy for feedback like this, and we'll make sure we can improve the quality even further in upcoming titles."

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 will be released sometime in 2011.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Sets New Records

We know the Call of Duty brand is a license to print money, but did you know each release is more commercially successful than the last? Black Ops, the latest installment of the Call of Duty franchise by Treyarch, has broken the previous sales record of biggest launch in entertainment history held by last years Modern Warfare 2.

Black Ops sold 5.6 million copies in Europe and North America on launch day alone, raking in US$360 million. Modern Warfare 2 in comparison sold 4.7 million copies in the same time frame for a total of US$310 million. Activision needn't be worried about the mass of Infinity Ward employees(Modern Warfare 2 developer) jumping ship last year and joining the EA camp after all.

Nintendo Posts First Half-Year Net Loss in Seven Years

Nothing lasts forever, but Nintendo had an incredibly long and prosperous time in the gaming industry, with seven years of profits to their name. The last three years resulted in huge profits thanks to the popularity of the Wii, but dwindling sales have resulted in the first half-year net loss of JP¥ 2.01 billion (about US$25 million) for the company.

Nintendo believes this downturn may continue until next year. However with the profit same time last year reaching JP¥ 69.49 billion (US$865 million) and the 3DS just around the corner, I doubt they have much to worry about.

US Wiimote Sales Number 65 Million

While the Wiimote gets phased out next month in favor of the new Wii Remote Plus, Nintendo has released the sales figures for the four year old controller in the US, and the numbers are staggering!

A total of 65 million Wiimotes have been sold in the US alone. Just over 30 million of those were bundled with Wii system. Another 12.92 million were bundled with Wii Play.
Standalone White Wiimotes make up the majority of non bundled sales at 18.56 million, while the one year old black Wiimote has sold 2.44 million. Pink ones have sold 467,500 and blue ones stand at 462,500 units sold. Very impressive numbers all round.

NBA Jam HD Heading to a Retail Stores in November

Boomshakalaka! Many gamers from the 16-bit days will remember the word being expressed by the enthusiastic commentator after a glorified dunk in the outrageously fun basketball game known as NBA Jam. While a HD remake was recently released on the Wii, there were rumors going round of an inferior downloadable version being released for the PS3 and Xbox 360, which would contain less modes and possible not have an online component. Those fears can be put to rest as EA has not only confirmed the game will indeed be playable online with all modes intact, but also be released in retail stores on November 17 for both the PS3 and 360 respectively.

It doesn't stop there. EA will also be releasing an online game update soon after launch, which will provide fans with additional game modes including Backboard Smash, Domination Free-for-All, Elimination and 21. It's disappointing the modes aren't available straight out of the box, but at least it will be provided at no extra charge. The update is scheduled for December.

Heat up your winter - Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: 3 Yome! comes in December

The Taikos are here to spend the winter with you. They heat the season up with a festive air. Come grab your drumsticks and pound to the beat. For the first time in the series history, a total of four gamers can play together, letting you perform more intricate patterns of beats.

This time, the package comes with more than 70 songs, some of them are from famous J-pop artists such as EXILE and Kimura Kaela. People who enjoy anime music can play to the Studio Ghibli and Naruto theme songs. Even Monster Hunter and Hatsune Miku contribute their music to this game, so be sure to listen to the taiko versions.

Although you can play with your Wii Remote control and Nunchakus, its more fun, and realistic to play with the TataCon. For people who don't already own the accessory, be sure to grab the Bundle version. Taiko no Tatsujin Minna de Party * 3-Yome! comes this December.

Wii Remote Plus Priced

After confirming that a Wii Remote Plus (which includes inbuilt Wii Motion Plus), was on its way to the public soon last month, Nintendo has now provided the details of the launch of the new product. So far only the Japanese launch has been revealed and the Wii Remote Plus will come in a variety of five different colors, retailing for ¥3,800 or around US $46. Alternatively, it will be available as a bundle with Wii Sports Resort for ¥5,800 or US $70.
Hopefully this will increase support for the Wii Motion Plus, which has been sorely lacking. Even a recent Nintendo published title like Metroid M did not support the add-on. Currently, having to hold the Wii Motion Plus together with a silicon case is inconvenient when needing to recharge the batteries, the Wii Motion Plus remote should alleviate this.

3D Call of Duty: Black Ops

Looks like Treyarch and Activision have jumped on the 3D bandwagon now. The newest iteration in the biggest selling gaming franchise will support 3D right out of the box. I am of course referring to Call of Duty: Black Ops, the hotly anticipated title for this Christmas season. It's still not clear which platforms will support 3D, as "all" were mentioned, but I'm assuming the DS and Wii versions will of course miss out, while the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC versions will have the option. The only problem being the expensive 3D TV's and glasses holding the technology back, but it's good to see early support for the technology.

Nintendo's Next Console Will Surprise

It's interesting to see someone from the Nintendo crew be the first one to talk about a new console. Metriod co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto spoke to 3DJuegos about a new console from Nintendo. The google translation gives us the following:

"At Nintendo we always have the obligation to surprise users with a new console. We have never done what others. We prefer to create something new that catches attention, and I think this will continue at this time. Surely the new Nintendo machine will leave you all with mouth open".
Some people speculated that a "Hi-res" Wii would be announced at E3, but that didn't happen. But was that due to not wanting to take the limelight asay from the 3DS? It's possible, but unlikely that the new console would be unveiled at the Tokyo Game Show. Not to mention the Wii is doing perfectly fine, even with the amount of shovelware that is being released. My bet is on E3 2011 and that this time Nintendo will be the first company to usher in the next generation of video game consoles.

E3: Nintendo Conference

After a few years of lackluster showings, Nintendo came out all guns blazing with the best show at E3 2010. Something to make everyone happy was shown, with plenty of new games in everyone's favorite franchises.

Shigeru Miyamoto showed off Zelda Skyward Sword. The game looks really fun and requires you to use the Wiimote as your sword and shield. However, it was quite embarassing I'm sure, as the motion controls did not work on stage properly, apparently from interference. We were assured that the controls work perfectly fine when playing the game.Mario Sports Mix looks to continue the tradition of Wii Sports with Nintendo characters. Play a whole heap of different sports that Mario has not starred in before. These include Volleyball, Hockey, Dodgeball and Basketball. It looks okay and will surely appeal to the Wii Sports fans.

Next up was Wii Party. Basically a party game with over 70 mini-games using Mii characters. Another casual game.

Did you enjoy Just Dance? Well, you'll be happy to know the sequel was shown with more of the same. It contains over 40 songs and now 8 players can play the game.

After two Golden Sun games on the GBA, we're finally treated to a Golden Sun game on the DS. The trailer showed more of what Golden Sun fans know and love, except now with full 3D graphics. It's called Golden Sun: Dark Dawn and comes out this holiday season.

A sequel to an exclusive Goldeneye 007 game for the Wii was a surprising announcement. The style and gameplay of the game very much seems to mimic the N64 predecessor.

Disney showed off an interesting platformer starring Mickey Mouse. Epic Mickey allows you to paint or erase the game world to solve the puzzles and move forward in the game. It's exclusive to the Wii and looking great already.

Kirby is being brought back to life on the Wii console after being absent so many years. Kirby Epic Yarn looked like an interesting and unique 2D style platformer.

After being out a while in Japan and selling millions of copies, Dragon Quest IX is finally coming to the West on July 11th.

Another big surprise was the announcement of the return of Donkey Kong Country. Even though a 3D Donkey Kong game was released way back on the N64, this game retains the 2D gameplay of the SNES generation, but with 3D graphics of course. It's being developed by the same team that did the Metriod Trilogy on Gamecube and Wii and looks very promising.

Metroid M by Team Ninja was one of the coolest games shown. The view is no longer in first-person, but more traditional 2D and third-person style. This is one to look out for in August 31st.

The 3DS was shown and looks like an incredible piece of hardware. A 3.5" stereoscopic widescreen LCD handles the 3D without the need for glasses. The 3D effect can be controlled with a slider. How much depth you want is up to you. Nintendo claims that the screen did not work well as a touch screen, especially with the 3D. Therefore only the bottom screen will be touch sensitive, just like on the original DS. A cool feature is the two cameras on case which can take 3D photos. Unfortunately these are still only 0.3MP. There's also a camera on the front for DSi compatibility.

The system has improved Wi-Fi and communication with other 3DS devices and can also be used to watch 3D movies. An analog stick has been added to the controls and the system is compatible with all DS and DSi games. Not much more information was given. Battery life is still unknown, as is release date and price.

Many were pleased to hear the next announcment of Kid Icarus' return and to the newly unveiled 3DS, no less! The trailer showed a great looking action game with sword and shooting elements both on the ground and in flight. Graphics wise, the game was about Wii standards, but considering it's an early launch title, it may improve. Kid Icarus Uprising is coming soon.

Nintendo did an excellent job this year and many will agree they had the best show this year.

E3 Conference Summary Part 2 - Nintendo

In part 2 of the E3 conferences, I'll be talking about Nintendo's conference which was shorter than the other two, but much better than last years presentation which was, well...crap. I was also much more on the moeny with my previous predictions on what would happen here. For all your Wii and DS news, read on.

As I mentioned before, I was sure that a certain plumber would be getting a new game on Wii and I was right on the mark. Luckily for gamers, Mario games are good and don't suck like the Sonic games, so while the plumber is starting to outstay his welcome (how about a new platformer?), I'm sure it will be a good game. It won't be like Galaxy though, this Mario game plays like a 2D Mario just like New Super Mario Bros. on DS. It will be 3D graphics of course. Also, the game has four player co-op, which is an interesting idea. Personally though, something new would have been my preference, but maybe Sega will take notice and make Sonic in the same way.

Next up was Wii Fit Plus. As someone who was bewildered by the success of Wii Fit, I can't really say this made me jump up for joy. Anyone heard of going OUTSIDE for excercise? Playing a sport, socializing, going to a gym, running etc. It contains 15 new balance "games" (I use the term loosely), calorie tracker, six new strengths and Yoga activities. Last time I checked, Yoga was a form of meditation and watching a screen and listening to sound isn't part of it. Meh, whatever.

Wii Motion Plus was shown, with plenty of demos showing the sensitivity. Lucky for Nintendo they were on the ball here, since Microsoft and Sony have come out with motion controllers that seem to have much better precision than the standard Wiimote.

A trailer of Final Fantasy Crystal Bearers. Not much new stuff here. It sure doesn't compare to FFXIII, but it might satisfy a Wii owners RPG needs.

After that there was a new trailer of Kingdom Hearts for DS, which is coming in September. A big seller no doubt.

Another DS game shown. This one's called Bowser's Inside Story and features Mario and Luigi going inside Bowser's "pipes". Ah, plenty of joke possibilities here. Anyway, it's coming this fall.

The sequel to the two Golden Sun GBA games was announced. I thought this series was dead. Luckily it's not! The Golden Sun games were some of the best on the GBA and the best RPG's.

DSi Facebook integration. No prizes for guessing if I skipped this bit. Do you really need Facebook on your DSi? As predicted, a new Zelda game was announced, Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and mentioned along with DSiware.

Okay, now we have something that left most people baffled. There was a big hype up for this add-on product. It's called the Wii Vitality Sensor and it reads your pulse from your finger. Boned. It's useless, 'nuff said.

Plenty of people were probably happy to hear about the Super Mario Galaxy sequel. Looks like Nintendo has learned from the Gamecube to release more than one proper Mario game. It looks like more of the same to me.

Announcements of third party titles. Nintendo trying to appeal to the more mature and hardcore gaming market with The Conduit, Resident Evil: Dark Side Chronicles, and Dead Space Extraction.

The surprising and most interesting title for last. A new Metroid game being made by Team Ninja of Ninja Gaiden fame. It's called Metroid: Other M and will feature an M rating. Whoa, prepare for the ketchup to go flying! It'll be interesting to see if it plays better than the flawed Ninja Gaiden 2.

Overall a good presentation. Couldn't compete with Microsoft or Sony, but much better than the one in 2008.

Demon Swords under the moon - Oboro Muramasa

Done by Vanillaware, under the artistic eye of Joji Kamitani and Yoshifumi Hashimoto, the Wii action adventure is very similar to Odin Sphere in terms of gameplay, therefore those who adored the Norse Mythology inspired RPG will love this Eastern counterpart.

One attractive aspect of the game is hacking and slashing, nothing quite compares to the simple fun of running a sword through hordes of enemies in a series of lightning moves.

Compared to Odin Sphere, the system seemed easier to master with difficulty levels that you can choose according to your abilities. The musou mode is friendlier for beginners (such as myself) and the most difficult mode that could be unlocked, or so I have heard, is torturous in a lovely, hellish sort of way, perfect for veterans.

According to wikipedia, a localized version will be going to the States and European countries, so hopefully gamers in those regions can get this title soon. For those who are impatient, come get the Japanese version now, as it is not uber difficult to learn the basics of the game.

Let's say that the action part of the game is not particularly difficult for those who can't speak a single word of Japanese.

You can start playing once you learn the basic moves such as pulling out a sword, slashing your enemies etc. But like all Japanese games, you need to know the language to fully understand the story, and with its pseudo archaic speech, this game might need a little getting used to in the beginning. Luckily, the game is more action packed than dialog intensive, so not understanding the speech won't be fatal.

As you proceed through the game, you can collect and create more swords through the smithing option. Learn the special characteristics of each sword, the lighter ones can be wielded faster to create more combos and the larger ones attack with more power. Other things you can create throughout the course of the game is food, you can cook your own by using the materials you have collected on the fields or by defeating enemies. The food such as the tofu pot looks absolutely scrumptious, by the way.

Genroku period, apparently, is a very colorful era in Japanese history, the game takes you through forests, coastal areas, towns and the red light districts. The era depicted is charming, intriguing and apparently, quite dangerous. A perfect time frame to adventure in. The game will cover your screen in layers and layers of vibrant paint throughout the playing time so you would feel like you have entered the world of Japanese paintings.

The story isn't quite as deep as Odin Sphere, but what it lacks in plot is recovered through the gameplay and much enhanced graphics. So if you have both PS2 and Nintendo Wii, nobody is going to stop you from getting both games (Odin Sphere is available as a Best Priced version as well.) And if you have a Sony PSP, there is Princess Crown, the spiritual ancestor of both of these games.

Games to Own - #1

Here's part one of a series of posts that will recommend some quality titles for your gaming collection may be under your radar. First pick goes to Bully: Scholarship Edition for Xbox 360. Another great game by Rockstar, the makers of the Grand Theft Auto games, Bully places you in the shoes of Jimmy Hopkins as he aims to survive at Bullworth, the school his mother has ditched him at while she goes of on her own.

Originally released on PS2, the game has received a nice graphics upgrade and some extra missions. Bully features a clever, funny and interesting storyline as well as some unique and fun mission types fans have come to know and love from Rockstar. There's plenty to do and even if you just speed through the missions, you'll still get a good 15 hours or so out of the game.

There are a few negatives of course. For one thing, while the graphics have been nicely improved, the loading times have not. If you're used to playing these open world games with no loading times, you'll be sorely disappointed. Every time you enter and exit a building, you'll be greeted with a loading screen. It's not too bad and certainly not game breaking, but it does get a bit annoying the further you delve into the game.

Also, while you earn respect with the various gangs at Bullworth, you can't choose which side to ally with. You're stuck doing the predetermined story missions which influence your respect. There are some other small niggling issues, but they're really not worth mentioning.

Bully is a fun and interesting open world game and less complicated than Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto titles. This one comes recommended with a score of 8.5 out of 10. It's also available on Wii.

Bokujou Monogatari / Harvest Moon - Soil a large corporation's plans through a hoe and a water can

A huge company is threatening to take over your plot of farmland and your way of life, so as a farm boy and a law abiding citizen, what are you to do? Make your land prosper and get it back through constructive ways.

Marriage and farming have always been centerpiece in the Harvest Moon series, however, the addition of the task to soil a big corporation's project has come at a very suitable time.

Anger and blood lust have reached its peak in the last few days and taking up fire arms is not a very sane way to relieve it. The whole finance/economic system is in need of a restructuring, and farming is one of the best places to start.

If bringing a large corporation down by hoes, water cans, cows and chickens could not sate your blood lust, come take up a sword and slay some monsters in Rune Factory Frontier on your Nintendo Wii system.

Given the violent crimes that are happening within the last 365 days (some involves shootings, other include knifes and other sharp instruments) government officials as well as moral groups that may know nothing about the array of genres available are all too ready to propose the banning of games and police media in the name of protecting the young.

Not only are the connection between violent games and crime difficult to prove, and in addition to that, not all games are violent, as I'm sure a lot of people may have noticed already. Harvest Moon is one of the many games that encourages creation and a series that parents will not be afraid to let their children play.

Although the act of farming is highly idealized in the series, it could be a way to inspire people to get closer to nature and have some fun in a more peaceful way.

And admittedly, engaging in violent acts in games can be very liberating and stress relieving at times. Most people have the ability to contain their frustrations in the virtual world and those who released it in the real world may not be gamers at all, so why not try to understand the community before proposing bans?

Blue before Valentines - Sayonara Tsuki no Haikyo

Moon gazing in at a pond of pink water lilies is a very romantic business, however, watching the moon alone as the sole survivor after an un-named catastrophy could be very lonely. Experience a bit of blue to further appreciate the cheery pink and red Valentines day this weekend.

Seto has set off for the large red tower (Tokyo Tower?) to find the trace of humans after his grandfather, his only family and companion died. On his way, he came across a silver haired girl who was just as surprised as he was at the sight of another human being and fled from the shock.

Thinking the white glint in her hair and the sweet note in her voice the light in his potentially lonely life, he followed the girl through the underground ruins and deserted theme parks and met an array of ghosts as well as eccentric characters.

Sick of being alone? Its time to set out.

It's not the action, it's the atmosphere and story that counts in Fragile. Although the action is wonderful in my opinion, hard core action gamers may find this department lacking. I've been able to emerge from the battles victorious, with relatively few injuries.

Although none of my adversaries which I have come across have extremely damaging attacks, they were spooky. From the different species of phantom hounds, stray ghosts to strange arms that come out of walls to grab at you, you feel as if you have walked into a ghost house in a theme park as well.

Graphics and music creates a dark atmosphere that dwells more on loneliness than horror, which is suitable for the theme. Collect items to learn of the thoughts of various people before they die. From the promise a mother made to her child during the earthquake to the abandoned dog that watched as his owner left him, all these snippets interweave together to bring out the loneliness and vulnerability of Seto, and therefore, his determination to find the girl.

Everything is quiet, which makes the growls and gigglings of the ghosts more eery. Voice acting is superb, players can see how much Seto has grown up, from the uncertain, stuttering boy to the determined young man at the end.

The Japanese, however, might prove to be a bit of a challenge. While neither tutorials nor dialogue are delivered in extremely difficult sentences, players might not be able to fully appreciate the story and its atmosphere if they do not understand the language at all.

The best way to appreciate your boyfriend or girlfriend during Valentines is to experience loneliness prior to the festival. What is sweetness and warmth if you do not know bitterness and coldness.
